Cast on 45,
50, 60 (70, 80).
Work in moss
stitch until instructed.
Moss 2 rows.

Repeat last
2 rows for a total of 4, 4, 4 (5, 5) times, 37, 42, 52 (60, 70) stitches total.

Cast on 42,
47, 47 (49, 49) = 79, 89, 99 (109, 119) stitches.
Join for
knitting in the round.
Continue
moss stitch for 5 rounds.
Change to
knit and make 1 stitch (result will be an even number for decreasing).

hat measures 10.5cm, 11.5cm, 12.5cm (13cm, 13.5cm) including moss stitch over
the forehead.
Place a
stitch marker at the centre back to mark the start of each round for
decreasing.

The edges of
the visor can be left as is, or pick up and knit 2 stitches for every 3 rows
across the top, then bind off. Repeat across the bottom. Another option is to
crochet the edge.
Weave in any
loose ends. Attach the visor by stitching through the buttons to hold it in
place. Stitch on the blade, leaving enough room at the front of the head so the
visor can sit between the front band and end of the blade. Block the hat over a
balloon or other round object.
Thanks for sharing this pattern. I found it shortly before Christmas when searching for a knitted helmet for my grandson. It's worked out well, though once I'd knitted an edging round the visor it was a bit large and covers most of his face.
